Se Cathedral Church Goa

The Se Cathedral of Goa is situated 9 kms from the Panaji, right on the bank of River Mandovi in Old Goa. The Church is a magnificent 16th century monument and supposed to be the largest in Asia is one of the famous churches in Goa.Dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria, the church was constructed in 1619 by the Portuguese after they capture the city of Goa in 1510. In 1561, the Portuguese government asked the Viceroy Redondo to construct a grandiose church which should be worthy of power, fame and wealth of the Portuguese. Subsequently a church was built which was later raised to the status of cathedral. The church remained under construction for nearly three-fourths of century, from 1562 to 1619. The main body was completed in 1619 while the altars got the final touch in 1652.

The church was designed by Ambrosio Argueiro and Julio Simao, the Stalwart engineers. Architecture is typically Portuguese in style with a Tuscan Peripheral and Corinthian core. The church is approximately 181 feet broad and 250 feet long. The front piece of the church stands at the height of 115 feet. The cathedral sited towards the west of the square known as terreiro de Sabaio and has its portico facing the east. The interior of the church especially the lofty towers exhibits the Corinthian style. The major attractions of the church are the 15 altars that are dedicated to Our Lady of Anguish, Our Lady of Three Needs or Our Lady of hope.

Best Time To Visit Se Cathedral Church in Goa

The Cathedral is opened from 7:30 A.M in the morning till 6:00 P.M in the evening. The best time to visit the place is between the months of November and February when the weather is moderate. Entry Fee- The entry to the church is free of cost.
